How to Reduce PDF File Size Without Ruining Text
Updated July 27, 2026 · By LocallyPDF
Start by removing pages that recipients do not need. For image-heavy scans, moderate image scaling usually saves more space than repeatedly recompressing already optimized text and vector content.
Choose a moderate quality setting first, then inspect small text, signatures, charts, and fine lines at normal reading zoom. Those details reveal compression damage earlier than large photos or headings.
Keep the original file. Compression results depend on how the source was produced, and a second aggressive pass can compound visible artifacts. If an upload portal has a firm limit, reduce settings gradually until the file fits.
For the strongest size reduction, split out only the required pages and then compress the smaller document. This preserves more useful detail than applying extreme compression to pages nobody needs.
